ABOUT ME
Marissa Gonzales

My name is Marissa Gonzales and I’m a student passionate about art and education. I am dedicated to developing my creative voice while continuing to grow academically and artistically. My primary mediums are oil paint and graphite, which I use to explore depth, emotion, and detail in my work. Through both traditional techniques and thoughtful composition, I strive to create pieces that reflect curiosity, discipline, and a strong appreciation for visual storytelling.
My Teaching
Philosphy
My teaching philosophy is grounded in empowering students through choice and providing a wide range of learning experiences, as I believe these elements foster creativity, confidence, and a genuine passion for learning. When students are given the freedom to explore and express their ideas, they are more likely to discover what excites them and develop a stronger connection to their work. By allowing students to make decisions, they gain a deeper understanding of their interests, strengths, and areas for growth.
In the classroom, I aim to encourage creativity by leaving room in assignments for personal interpretation through choices in topics, mediums, or subjects. While I will provide clear guidance and guardrails to ensure required concepts are learned, students will still have the freedom to take creative risks and add their own voice. I also believe that exposure to a variety of artistic experiences helps students discover their niche within the art community.
Although I am passionate about classical mediums, I want students to explore multiple forms of art so they can better understand what resonates with them. Together, these principles create an environment that nurtures curiosity, supports artistic growth, and builds confidence in students’ ability to explore and develop their ideas.
My
Artist Statement
My work focuses on exploring color theory and the emotional depth color can convey when used intentionally across multiple mediums. I view color as a powerful language capable of communicating what words often cannot, allowing me to translate human emotion, personality, and inner experience into vivid visual form.
Through portraits and other realism-based subjects, I use color not only to represent the physical world but also to reveal the subtle emotional landscapes beneath the surface. Portraiture is my primary focus because it enables me to depict individuals as more than their outward appearance, capturing their energy, emotions, and complexity. By carefully selecting hues, contrasts, and levels of saturation, I aim to portray the whole person rather than just a likeness. Soft tones may suggest vulnerability, bold contrasts can express strength or tension, and vibrant palettes often convey joy, passion, or movement.
Painting and colored pencil are my strongest mediums, each offering distinct ways to manipulate color, texture, and depth through either expressive layering or controlled blending. Ultimately, my work seeks to move beyond what is immediately visible, combining realism and expressive color to create emotionally resonant pieces that invite viewers to feel as much as they see.
